Low in spirits, feeling tired, and not enjoying activities one once enjoyed could be signs of mild depression. Although there are many causes for depression and many treatments too, a healthy diet plays an important role. A balance of mood enhancing chemicals in the brain is necessary for the brain cells to function normally. If you suffer from mild depression, eating the following foods might help to relieve it.
Meat, fish, egg yolks, beans: These foods are high in iron. Iron is necessary to boost the production of chemical trasmitters in the brain.
Citrus fruits: They contain vitamin C which enhances iron absorption.
Dark green leafy vegetables: Such as cabbage and spinach. They contain folic acid which promotes the production of serotonin, a mood-lifting hormone.
Milk products, seeds, and nuts: These foods are rich in calcium. Calcium activates enzymes in the brain that are needed for normal cell activity.
Shellfish, whole grains: They contain magnesium which promotes normal cell activity in the brain.
Bananas, whole grain cereals: These are high in potassium. People that are depressed usually have low levels of this nutrient.
Vitamin B6: Found in avocado, bananas, whole grain, dark leafy vegetables. Vitamin B6 helps convert the aminoacid tryptophan into serotonin.
Brewer's yeast, fruits, milk, legumes: These foods contain inositol, a nutrient that helps regulate mood swings.
Tuna, salmon, or mackerel: These cold-water fish contain Omega-3 fatty acids that are good "brain food". Omega-3 pills are also available commercially.
Peas, root vegetables, nuts: Contain zinc which may help prevent depression.
If you suffer from severe depression or are having suicidal thoughts, seek professional help immediately.
